Optical Scan Voting Machines

Ken led the effort to find a modern, reliable alternative to the outdated manual voting machines used in Newton for more than three decades. The old machines were expensive to store, move, and repair and were jamming with increasing frequency, jeopardizing the reliability of Newton elections. Ken worked with colleagues to research a modern technology that would be reliable and cost-effective, while still providing a paper trail, so that ballots could be hand-counted in the case of a disputed election.

Ken's work on this issue culminated in a recommendation that the City purchase the modern optical scan machines that we use today.
